Winter Storm Service Changes: January 25-26, 2026
A powerful winter storm is expected to bring heavy snowfall and frigid temperatures to our region this weekend, and we're taking proactive measures to ensure the safety of our passengers and the smooth operation of our transportation services. Here's a comprehensive overview of the service changes you can expect on subways, buses, the Long Island Rail Road, and Metro-North Railroad.
Subway Service:
- Express trains will make local stops this weekend to prepare for the storm. Many regular service changes have been canceled to minimize disruptions. For the most up-to-date information, refer to the Weekender (https://www.mta.info/article/mta-weekender-january-23-26-2026).
Bus Service:
- Local bus riders may experience longer wait times. We will be temporarily removing some buses from service to attach snow chains and taking articulated buses out of service during the storm.
Long Island Rail Road (LIRR):
- The LIRR will operate on a modified Sunday schedule, with the following adjustments:
- No service between Ronkonkoma and Greenport.
- Reduced Babylon Branch service, with no direct trains to or from Grand Central.
- Several planned service changes have been canceled for this weekend and the following week, including:
- Brooklyn weekend service suspension.
- Kew Gardens, Forest Hills, and Woodside westbound weekend bypassing.
- Montauk weekday overnight busing.
- Elmont-UBS Arena, Queens Village, and Hollis midday westbound bypassing on Monday.
Metro-North Railroad:
- Metro-North will provide hourly service on the Hudson, Harlem, and New Haven lines on Sunday. The New Canaan, Danbury, and Waterbury branches will follow their regular weekend schedules.
- West of Hudson service on the Port Jervis and Pascack Valley lines will be suspended starting at 2 p.m. on Sunday. For the latest updates, visit NJTransit's website (https://www.njtransit.com/customer-notice/2040498).

Safety Tips for Travelers:
- Allow extra travel time, especially on Sunday and Monday when the storm is expected to peak.
- Exercise caution, particularly on stairs, platforms, and when boarding or exiting trains and buses.
