The Bucs' OC Search: A Familiar Face Returns?
In a surprising turn of events, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' quest for a new offensive coordinator has led them back to a well-known figure. Todd Monken, the former OC under Head Coach Dirk Koetter from 2016-18, is now in the running for the same position he once held. Monken and the Bucs met face-to-face on Wednesday, reigniting the possibility of a second stint.
But here's where it gets intriguing... Monken is just one of many candidates the Buccaneers have interviewed in their extensive search. In the last six days alone, they've spoken to five other individuals, including Mike Kafka, Brian Callahan, David Shaw, Israel Woolfork, and Zac Robinson. This search began after the team's decision to part ways with Josh Grizzard and other assistant coaches last Thursday, signaling a significant shift in their coaching staff.
Monken's recent experience as the Baltimore Ravens' offensive coordinator from 2020-22 is a key part of his resume. During his time there, the Ravens' offense thrived, ranking highly in various categories. With Lamar Jackson at the helm, Monken's offense found success in balance, leading the league in rushing yards and passer rating. The Ravens' attack was efficient, ranking in the top five in yards per carry, third-down conversion rate, and total first downs.
And this is the part most people miss... Monken's impact wasn't just felt in Baltimore. During his three-year run as the Buccaneers' OC from 2016-18, Tampa Bay's offense also excelled. They ranked highly in net yards per game, net passing yards, and third-down conversion rate. Monken's influence extended beyond the play-calling, as he also guided wide receiver Mike Evans to a Pro Bowl selection in 2016.
In between his coordinator roles, Monken had a diverse coaching career. He spent a season with the Cleveland Browns, working with current Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield, and then led the University of Georgia Bulldogs to back-to-back National Championships. His coaching journey began in the NFL as the Jacksonville Jaguars' wide receivers coach, and he also had various stops at the collegiate level, including a three-year stint as the head coach at Southern Miss.
So, will Monken return to Tampa Bay as the Buccaneers' OC? Only time will tell. But one thing is for sure: this search has sparked plenty of interest and debate. What do you think? Should the Bucs bring back Monken, or is it time for a fresh start? Share your thoughts in the comments and let's discuss!
