Ateno Architecture Studio has unveiled Olen, an extraordinary underground coastal hotel nestled on the island of Syros, Greece. This unique structure is half-buried into its cliff-edge site, offering breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea. The design brief called for a seven-suite resort on a relatively untouched site, and Ateno Architecture Studio delivered a masterpiece that seamlessly blends architecture with nature.
The studio's approach was to create a stepped form described as 'amphitheatrical', blending open, expansive terraces with skylit, subterranean rooms. The composition is framed by textured, earth-toned render walls, enhancing the connection between the built environment and the natural landscape. This design philosophy is evident in the three distinct elements: The Plane, The Line, and The Point, which step down the site, offering varying levels of privacy.
The Plane, located at the highest point, features a curved retaining wall, a leaf-shaped pergola, and a pool, providing a stunning terrace with panoramic views. Below, The Line contains two larger subterranean living units that can operate independently or as a single space, opening onto a shared terrace with an infinity pool. At the end of the path, The Point is an independent, subterranean guesthouse, fronted by a curved stone retaining wall and a small circular pool.
The interior design embraces a warm, off-white palette, creating a light and airy atmosphere despite the underground setting. Light stone floors unify the external terraces with the internal rooms, providing a cool surface during the summer months. This resort showcases Ateno Architecture Studio's commitment to preserving the natural landscape while creating a luxurious and immersive experience for guests.
Olen's design is a testament to the studio's ability to create unique, site-specific architecture that respects the environment. It joins other remarkable half-buried buildings in Greece, such as the Katikies Kirini Zoe Wellness Centre in Santorini and the Cave House by Mold Architects, which showcases the country's rich architectural diversity.
