With the hire process now concluding, Penn State has identified its next leader. The plan is to install Matt Campbell as head coach, following a 54-day search window, as reported by a reliable source.
Contract details indicate a lengthy commitment: an eight-year deal with Penn State.
Campbell arrives after a decade at Iowa State, where he posted a 72-55 record and delivered five seasons with eight or more wins. The Cyclones have achieved eight-win seasons relatively infrequently in their history, making Campbell’s tenure notable for producing consistent success.
Prior to Iowa State, Campbell spent a little over four seasons at Toledo, where he went 35-15 and earned nine wins in three different seasons. He was promoted from offensive coordinator in 2010 to 2011, eventually rising to the top coaching position.
This season, Campbell led Iowa State to an 8-4 record.
Background on the hiring process
The search began on October 12, when Penn State and athletic director Pat Kraft parted ways with former head coach James Franklin after more than 11 years and a 104-45 record, including a College Football Playoff appearance and a Big Ten championship.
Penn State’s coaching search featured several twists, including a strong push for BYU coach Kalani Sitake, who ultimately decided to remain with the Cougars. Other candidates exited the process as well.
