A $100,000 investment in the future of astronomy! The Gulliver Astronomical Observatory, a beloved landmark for stargazers and scientists, is getting a much-needed upgrade. But here's where it gets controversial: the current dome, which has stood since 1971, is no longer fit for purpose. It's not just about aesthetics; it's about safety and accessibility too.
The Manitoba government, in collaboration with Brandon University, is stepping up to ensure the observatory's legacy continues. Minister Renée Cable and Minister Glen Simard announced the funding, which will replace the outdated dome and protect the powerful telescope within.
"For generations, this telescope has been a gateway to the cosmos," Cable said. "It's time to ensure its longevity and make it even more accessible."
The current dome, which has served its purpose for over 50 years, is now vulnerable to the elements and requires manual operation, posing risks to staff and visitors. The new dome will be a state-of-the-art, automated marvel, weather-sealed and connected to the internet, allowing remote operation and live streaming for all to enjoy.
"This investment is about more than just replacing a dome," Simard added. "It's about inspiring curiosity and wonder, and ensuring our community has access to this unique resource."
The university's original telescope and dome were installed in 1971, with the telescope itself being replaced in 2009 with a high-tech, computerized model. Now, with the generous support of Dr. Austin Gulliver's family and the Manitoba government, the observatory is set to enter a new era.
"Our researchers explore everything from Manitoba's soils to distant galaxies," said Dr. Christine Bovis-Cnossen, President and Vice-Chancellor of Brandon University. "This investment, combined with the Gulliver family's donation, will open up a universe of possibilities for our students and community."
