Dominican Republic's World Baseball Classic roster just got a major boost! One of MLB's most promising young sluggers is joining the team for the 2026 Classic.
But here's where it gets exciting (and a little controversial): Junior Caminero, a 22-year-old third baseman with a stellar 2025 season, is suiting up for his home country.
Caminero, who smashed 45 home runs in 2025 (the sixth most in the Major Leagues), is joining a team that's no slouch. The Dominicans are aiming for their second World Baseball Classic championship, having won in 2013.
However, the team faced a setback in 2023, finishing third in their pool and missing out on the quarterfinals despite a roster that included stars like Juan Soto and Julio Rodriguez. Will Caminero's addition be the spark the team needs to reach the top again?
Caminero, born in the Dominican capital of Santo Domingo, has been making waves in the MLB. Ranked as MLB Pipeline's No. 6 overall prospect when he was called up to the Majors in 2023, he had a breakout 2025 season with Tampa Bay, batting .264 with an .846 OPS, 45 homers, and 110 RBIs.
And get this: Caminero will be tuning up for the WBC in his own hometown! The Dominican national team will face the Tigers in two games on March 3-4 at Estadio Quisqueya Juan Marichal in Santo Domingo. Pool play begins on March 5, with the Dominicans facing Nicaragua in their opener on March 6.
