The ongoing negotiations between Iran and the US have reached a critical juncture, with both sides digging in their heels on key issues. At the heart of the matter lies the controversial topic of Iran's nuclear program and its enrichment of uranium.
Prime Minister Netanyahu of Israel has made it clear that Iran must abandon its pursuit of enriched uranium and refrain from producing more. He believes this is crucial for global security. However, Iran views zero enrichment as a non-negotiable red line, arguing that it has the right to enrich uranium under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
The US, under President Trump, has been exerting immense pressure on Iran to reach a deal. In a show of force, the US has bolstered its military presence in the Middle East, deploying two aircraft carriers, including its largest warship ever, to the region. Secretary of State Marco Rubio assured that additional American naval forces would safeguard against any potential threats.
But here's where it gets controversial: Rubio stated that President Trump favors diplomacy and a negotiated settlement over direct attacks on Iran. This stance has raised eyebrows, especially considering Trump's previous decision to withdraw from the 2015 nuclear deal, which had successfully limited Iran's nuclear activities in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions.
In a recent development, Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner are set to meet with Iranian negotiators, including Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. Rubio expressed optimism, saying, "No one's ever been able to do a successful deal with Iran, but we're going to try."
Ahead of these talks, Iran's Ambassador to the UN, Takht-Ravanchi, offered a compromise. He proposed diluting Iran's 60%-enriched uranium as a gesture of goodwill. However, highly enriched uranium, which is near weapons-grade, has fueled suspicions that Iran is inching closer to developing a nuclear weapon, a claim Iran vehemently denies.
Takht-Ravanchi told the BBC, "We are ready to discuss this and other issues related to our program if they are ready to talk about sanctions." He did not specify whether this meant lifting all or some sanctions or whether Iran would consider shipping out more than 400kg of highly enriched uranium.
Washington has been actively pursuing a deal with Tehran, but Netanyahu expressed skepticism during a meeting with Trump at the White House. He emphasized Israel's key demands, which include curbing Iran's development of ballistic missiles, which have been used to strike Israel, and cutting support for proxy groups in the Middle East, such as Hamas and Hezbollah.
Tehran, so far, has refused to discuss its ballistic missile program with US officials.
