Prepare to be amazed! The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), a colossal project decades in the making, has finally opened its doors near the iconic Giza Pyramids. This isn't just another museum; it's a monumental celebration of ancient Egyptian civilization, aiming to revitalize Egypt's tourism and economy.
This incredible museum, the largest of its kind globally, showcases over 50,000 artifacts that offer a deep dive into the lives of the ancient Egyptians. For the first time ever, the entire collection of treasures from the tomb of the legendary King Tutankhamun will be on display.
World leaders, including royalty and heads of state, gathered for the grand opening ceremony in Cairo, marking what the Egyptian president's office hailed as a pivotal moment in human history. President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi himself emphasized the museum's role in blending the brilliance of ancient Egyptians with the creativity of modern Egypt, enriching global culture.
But here's where it gets controversial... The GEM is one of several ambitious projects spearheaded by el-Sissi since 2014, designed to breathe life back into an economy that has struggled for years. The museum is projected to attract a staggering 5 million visitors annually, potentially placing it among the world's most popular museums. Consider this: in 2024, the Louvre in Paris drew 8.7 million visitors, the British Museum 6.5 million, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York 5.7 million.
The grand opening was a spectacle, with drone light shows illuminating the sky with images of King Tut's mask and chariot, accompanied by Egyptian pop songs and pharaonic statues. A public holiday was declared, and security was heightened across Cairo. The event featured a performance by an orchestra and musicians, described as a "global symphony of humanity."
The museum, which has been partially open, was closed for final preparations before the grand opening. Construction began in 2005 under President Hosni Mubarak, intended to replace the outdated Egyptian Museum in downtown Cairo.
The museum's design is striking, with a towering, triangular glass façade mirroring the nearby pyramids, offering 24,000 square meters of exhibition space. Visitors are greeted by a granite colossus of Ramses the Great, one of ancient Egypt's most powerful pharaohs. A grand six-story staircase leads to the main galleries, offering stunning views of the pyramids. A bridge connects the museum to the pyramids, allowing easy access for tourists.
The museum's 12 main galleries, which opened last year, feature artifacts from prehistoric times to the Roman era, organized by era and theme. Two halls are dedicated to the 5,000 artifacts from King Tutankhamun's collection. This includes the boy pharaoh's funeral beds, chariots, golden throne, sarcophagus, and burial mask.
Zahi Hawass, Egypt's most renowned archaeologist, calls the Tutankhamun collection the museum's masterpiece, emphasizing its significance.
And this is the part most people miss... The museum is expected to significantly boost tourism, attracting visitors who will stay longer, thus injecting much-needed foreign currency into Egypt's economy. The government has also invested in infrastructure around the museum, including new highways, a metro station, and the Sphinx International Airport.
The tourism sector has been recovering after years of political turmoil and the pandemic, with a record 15.7 million tourists visiting Egypt in 2024, contributing about 8% of the country's GDP. The country anticipates approximately 18 million tourists this year, with a goal of 30 million annually by 2032.
The museum will open to the public on November 4th, the anniversary of Howard Carter's discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb.
