Get ready for an exciting twist in language learning! Duolingo, the beloved language app, has just dropped a game-changer on Android users.
In a bold move, Duolingo has introduced a Chess Player-vs-Player (PvP) mode, offering a unique blend of language learning and strategic gameplay. But here's where it gets controversial: is this a genius way to make learning more engaging, or a distraction from the core mission of language acquisition?
The Duolingo Method, which prioritizes hands-on learning over memorization, is now applied to the ancient game of chess. Learners start with the fundamentals, guided by the app's chess coach, Oscar, and gradually progress to solving checkmates independently. Around 75% of the course is puzzle-based, providing ample practice with core tactics, while the remaining lessons focus on mini and full games.
And this is the part most people miss: the PvP mode adds a social and competitive twist. Learners can now test their skills against real opponents, matched based on their skill level. Imagine the thrill of outsmarting an opponent in a language you're learning!
"Bringing PvP mode to Android adds significant 'liquidity' to PvP matches," says Irene Tong, Duolingo's regional marketing manager for Southeast Asia. "Shorter wait times globally, especially for higher-skilled players, make for a more engaging experience."
The Android launch follows the successful iOS debut of Chess PvP mode in late 2025. Duolingo plans to enhance the course further, with features like playing with friends, game review tools, and a web version of chess.
Tong adds, "We want to make PvP feel more welcoming, especially for beginners. Chess is about connecting and strengthening critical thinking skills, and we aim to make that experience accessible and empowering."
To bring the chess experience beyond the app, Duolingo hosted a chess pop-up activation in Jakarta, featuring challenges, a giant chessboard, and live puzzles.
Duolingo's Chess course is free on Android and available in multiple languages. So, are you ready to checkmate your language learning goals?
