An external panel has been appointed to manage the hospital, following three separate incidents in as many weeks where patients slipped away from the mental health unit. Mental Health Minister Rose Jackson stressed that community safety remains the government’s top priority and that the recent events have shaken the public’s confidence in how the mental health system is run.
A formal review into these incidents is already underway. Jackson emphasized that the review will be thorough and cannot be rushed, noting that it will examine patient treatment, security procedures, and how abscondings are handled. In the meantime, Cumberland Hospital has increased security to protect both patients and staff. Security coverage has risen from four guards to six, with a senior officer added to oversee operations.
The management change follows heightened scrutiny after the widow of a man killed in a random stabbing in Sydney’s west blamed NSW Health for negligence. Becky Ramadani asserted that the health department’s duty of care failures contributed to her partner’s death, stating, "+The negligence of the health department is responsible for this.
" Her remarks came as one of the hospital’s absconding individuals, Setefano Leaaetoa, was identified as the suspect in the stabbing case.
Looking ahead, Cumberland Hospital is slated for permanent closure at the end of next year, in conjunction with the opening of the new Westmead Integrated Mental Health Complex, a $540 million project. Health officials say the move will end the era of housing distressed individuals in smaller, isolated facilities. Rose Jackson described the Westmead complex as an opportunity to relocate patients into a modern, integrated network of health services.
