Get ready for a thrilling boxing match that's about to unfold! Former WBO cruiserweight champion, Chris Billam-Smith, is all eyes and ears for David Benavidez's upcoming move to the cruiserweight division. But here's where it gets controversial...
Benavidez, a light heavyweight, is set to challenge WBO and WBA cruiser titlist Gilberto "Zurdo" Ramirez in May. And this is the part most people miss: Ramirez previously dethroned Billam-Smith to claim the WBO title.
"From a boxing perspective, it's an incredible matchup," Billam-Smith remarked. "With the Mexican heritage involved, it adds an extra layer of excitement. Two tough guys, and we all know how tough Mexicans can be. I've experienced Zurdo's toughness firsthand, so I don't expect an easy win for either fighter. But Benavidez has a unique style that could give Zurdo a run for his money."
Billam-Smith, 35, fought only once in 2025, defeating Brandon Glanton. He has also been called out by the team of Swedish fighter Robin Safar, based in Las Vegas, who was initially scheduled to fight Ramirez early in 2026 (a fight that has since been canceled).
"I haven't seen much of Safar, but I'm open to fights that will put me in a strong position for a title shot," Billam-Smith admitted. With a record of 21-2 (13 KOs) and ranked in the top eight by all major sanctioning bodies, Billam-Smith is confident he's not far from another world title opportunity.
Trained by Shane McGuigan, Billam-Smith is a Bournemouth, UK, native. His impressive resume includes writing for international publications like GQ and Men's Health, and he's also a board member for the Ringside Charitable Trust and the Ring of Brotherhood. Additionally, he's a broadcaster for TNT Sports and hosts the popular "Boxing Life Stories" podcast.
