Celtic's Struggles: Martin O'Neill's Honest Take on Squad Depth & January Transfers (2026)

Celtic manager Martin O'Neill admitted he didn't learn much from his squad's performance after a hard-fought Scottish Cup victory over lower-league Auchinleck Talbot. This statement highlights a key issue: even with a win, the manager felt the team's performance didn't reveal much about their potential.

Only captain Callum McGregor retained his place from the previous match, as O'Neill gave opportunities to players on the fringes of the squad. Stephen Welsh returned after a loan spell, Michel-Ange Balikwisha was brought back into the team, and Johnny Kenny was given a starting role.

O'Neill has been vocal about the need to strengthen the team in the January transfer window, but so far, there have been no new additions. Kenny scored the opening goal, but he also missed several chances, and substitute Sebastian Tounekti added a second goal with a stunning strike.

The fans' frustration was evident, chanting 'sign a player' during the match. O'Neill admitted he was concerned about the game, stating, 'We should have played much better. I'm not so sure I learned much more than I knew before.'

When asked about potential signings, O'Neill joked, 'We are making some progress and hopefully we will get the players in before the end of the season.' He maintained his perfect domestic record this season after taking over in October.

O'Neill used the match against Auchinleck to assess players he hadn't used previously. He mentioned making 10 changes, giving opportunities to players like Balikwisha and Paulo Bernardo. He added, 'We've a fair idea of what we need to do [in the window] and I want to get on with it.'

Kenny's goal was his sixth of the season, but his missed chances and overall performance frustrated fans. Former Celtic defender Jackie McNamara noted that teams often allow Celtic to have possession, forcing them wide because they lack a target man. He added, 'If they did they would score many more goals but you can see with Kenny it's not his game. He's a second striker and not an out and out number nine.'

Former Hearts striker Ryan Stevenson was also unimpressed with some of Celtic's players, stating that O'Neill would learn a lot about the players on the fringes. He said, 'He and his backroom staff will have a meeting and they'll say 'he didn't grasp his opportunity' or 'I don't think he did well enough' or 'he did do well enough'.

Kenny hopes his goal will spark a better run of form before crucial matches in Europe against Bologna and Utrecht, and a Scottish Premiership match against league leaders Hearts. He stated, 'That's the life of a striker, you need to be ready when something comes. It's been a tough few weeks. Every striker misses chances and hopefully I can go on a run.'

But here's where it gets controversial: The lack of new signings and the team's performance against a lower-league team raise questions about the club's strategy. Is the manager's assessment of the squad accurate? Are the current players capable of competing at the highest level?

And this is the part most people miss: The focus on individual player performances and the need for new signings overshadow the importance of team cohesion and tactical adjustments.

What do you think? Do you agree with the assessment of the players? What changes would you like to see the team make?
