Tanzania's Kilombero farmers are set to boost their sugarcane yields with the introduction of improved seed variety R570. The Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute (TARI) has distributed over 300 tonnes of this high-performing seed to 60 farmers in the Kilombero District, aiming to enhance productivity and increase farmers' incomes through more efficient cultivation practices.
The R570 variety has proven its mettle, consistently delivering high-quality results and impressive yields, according to Dr. Hildelitha Msita, Manager for Natural Resources Research and Agricultural Engineering at TARI. She highlighted the institute's commitment to ensuring a sustainable supply of certified seed by establishing a dedicated sugarcane seed multiplication farm in Ichonde Village, covering four acres.
"We've set up the Ichonde farm to guarantee a reliable and continuous supply of improved seed for farmers," Dr. Msita assured. She also encouraged farmers to embrace the R570 variety, emphasizing its potential to enhance efficiency, increase harvests, and boost household income.
The Kilombero District Commissioner, Mr. Dunstan Dominik Kyobya, expressed gratitude for TARI's support, urging residents to adopt the improved seed. He believes this will lead to higher and more profitable yields, benefiting both individual farmers and the nation.
One of the grateful farmers, Mr. Yordan Nguruwe, praised TARI for providing the seed, which he believes will significantly contribute to income generation for both individuals and the country as a whole.
