Despite what he describes as an "extreme" shift in the Premier League's playing style, the focus remains squarely on bringing in young, promising players. This approach, Slot insists, is the bedrock of Liverpool's long-term success.
Slot recently shared his candid thoughts in a pre-match press conference, admitting that he finds many Premier League games these days less of a spectacle. He's observed a significant increase in the emphasis on set-pieces and raw physicality, a departure from the aesthetically pleasing, possession-based football once championed by the likes of Pep Guardiola's Barcelona. It's a style that can be tough to watch, especially when compared to the more fluid attacking displays of yesteryear.
But here's where it gets interesting: While Liverpool experienced some growing pains last summer, particularly with their substantial investment in new talent, Slot is adamant that the club's core strategy of signing younger players, many of whom haven't yet tested themselves in the Premier League, will continue. "Our model is that we sign young players," he stated, as reported by the Liverpool Echo. He elaborated that it's natural for younger players to need more time to adjust to the rigors of the Premier League compared to seasoned professionals in their late twenties who are already at their physical peak. "It's exactly the reason why we have our model, because we believe that players can get better," Slot emphasized. He pointed to the club's past successes, like those achieved six years ago and just last season, as proof that this model works.
It's clear that Slot and Liverpool's recruitment team have faith in the players brought in last summer – with only a select few, like Alexander Isak and Milos Kerkez, having prior Premier League experience – to thrive in the long run. However, Slot did concede that the extent of the stylistic shift in the English top flight this season was more pronounced than anticipated. "A rebuild takes time, a transition takes time, and that's what we did last summer," he explained. "But we didn't expect the league to become like it did this season. You couldn't know this because last season it wasn't as extreme as it is this season." He went on to suggest that this trend is common: when a particular approach yields success, others tend to emulate it. "Ten to 15 years ago a lot of people wanted to play like Barcelona." He even expressed a hope that future World Cup winners will achieve victory through captivating open-play goals, rather than other means.
And this is the part that might raise an eyebrow: Liverpool is already on the verge of securing another signing, Rennes centre-back Jeremy Jacquet, in a deal reportedly worth £60 million. However, he's set to arrive recovering from shoulder surgery.
