Alyssa Healy to India: Build Flat Wickets After South Africa Test Loss! (2025)

India's Test cricket strategy is under the microscope after a shocking defeat! Following a painful 30-run loss to South Africa in Kolkata, the cricketing world is buzzing with opinions, and Australian captain Alyssa Healy has a strong one: India needs to rethink its pitch strategy.

The recent match saw India stumble while chasing a modest target of 124 runs, a performance that led to their first Test loss in Kolkata in 13 years. South Africa's spinner, Simon Harmer, played a pivotal role, taking an impressive eight wickets, while Temba Bavuma's resilient half-century put the Proteas in the lead.

Healy's perspective, shared on the Willow Talk Cricket Podcast, is clear: India's focus on creating turning wickets is backfiring. "I just don't know what they're [India] doing to themselves," she stated, highlighting the global challenge of batting against spin. Healy suggests a shift: "So, build yourself some flat wickets and let them go."

But here's where it gets controversial... The data backs up Healy's claims. From 2016 to 2019, Indian batters averaged an impressive 53.3 at home against spinners. However, from 2020 onwards, this average plummeted to 33.8, with a batting strike rate of 60. This decline directly correlates with India's waning dominance on home turf.

This defeat at Eden Gardens also entered the record books. The target of 124 became the second-lowest total India has failed to chase in Test history, with the lowest being 120 against the West Indies in Bridgetown in 1997.

On the other hand, this victory also marks South Africa's second-lowest successful defense in Test cricket. Their lowest remains 117 against Australia in Sydney in 1994. The Proteas are now poised to make history by winning the series in the second and final match, scheduled to begin at Assam's Barsapara Stadium on November 22.

What do you think? Do you agree with Alyssa Healy's assessment of India's pitch strategy? Is there a different approach that India should consider? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
